چکیده

Nowadays, dispersive mirrors are able to cover the wavelength range of 4.5 optical octaves and can be used from 220 nm up to 4500 nm. Various design approaches to dispersive mirrors in visible and near IR are briefly discussed. We consider in more detail two dispersive mirrors representing extreme cases. The first one is a mirror working in the range of 290−360 nm and providing group delay dispersion of -75 fs2. The second one is a mirror working in the range of 2500−4500 nm and providing +500 fs2 of group delay dispersion.

Efficient broadband highly dispersive HfO2/SiO2 multilayer mirror for pulse compression in near ultraviolet

We report on design, production and implementation of a highly dispersive broadband dielectric multilayer mirror covering near ultraviolet range from 290 nm to 350 nm. The described mirrors, having 92% spectrally averaged reflectance in the ultraviolet range and ∼ 85 fs of group delay difference, that allow compression to ∼ 7 fs, provide a strong foundation for generation of few-fs pulses in th...

Bright broadband coherent fiber sources emitting strongly blue-shifted resonant dispersive wave pulses.

We predict and realize the targeted wavelength conversion from the 1550-nm band of a fs Er:fiber laser to an isolated band inside 370-850 nm, corresponding to a blue-shift of 700-1180 nm. The conversion utilizes resonant dispersive wave generation in widely available optical fibers with good efficiency (~7%). The converted band has a large pulse energy (~1 nJ), high spectral brightness (~1 mW/n...

Dispersive mirror in AlGaAs designed by inverse spectral theory.

We introduce a new mathematical method, based on the inverse spectral theory of Gel'fand and Levitan, of designing dispersive coatings for use in femtosecond lasers. We fabricated an example in AlGaAs by metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition. The mirror has a high value of group delay dispersion over a bandwidth of 10 nm, reaching an extreme of -1200 fs(2) at the center (805 nm) and falling t...

Clean sub-8-fs pulses at 400 nm generated by a hollow fiber compressor for ultraviolet ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy.

Clean 7.5 fs pulses at 400 nm with less than 3% energy in tiny satellite pulses were obtained by spectral broadening in a hollow fiber and dispersive compensating using a prism pair together with a deformable mirror system. As an example, this stable and clean pulse was used to study the ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy of photoactive yellow protein. Moreover, the self-diffraction signal shows...

Ultrafast scientific lasers expand on their legacy

While ultrafast (picosecond and femtosecond) lasers are an essential subset of the lasers used today in industry and the medical arena (for example, machining glass for smartphone screens for the former, and laser eye surgery for the latter), it is the use of ultrafast lasers in research that allows such lasers to show their true colors, sometimes literally. Indeed, science is where it all bega...
